Instagram Muscles In On Live Video22 November 2016
Another week, another social update… and this time, it’s Insta casting shade on Snapchat.
In yet another update to add more live video capabilities on social platforms, Instagram has this week rolled out two updates. The first is the option for users to send temporary videos as direct messages, and the second is the capability to broadcast live video on its Stories feature.
After accusations of copycat behaviour with the launch of Instagram Stories earlier in the year, live video, is something that has given Instagram a point of difference over Snapchat.
Of course, Insta’s parent company, Facebook, has been leading the way with this over the last year. However, one difference to Facebook’s facility is that Insta’s doesn’t allow for playback, so it is truly live, only showing you what’s happening right now.
The two new features certainly build on Instagram’s Stories, which has been widely adopted by users. Launched in August, it now has some 100 million people using it every day, which will certainly raise a few eyebrows in Snapchat’s offices, especially with it being just 50 million short of Snap’s reported 150 million daily users.
